Example

In this question type, students have to drag objects to one or more predefined drop areas that are defined as correct. These dragable objects can consist of an image, text or a combination of both.

NOTE! There are two new versions of this question type called "Graphic Gap Match" and "Inline Gap Match" that have more detailed setting options. If you are interested in this question type, we recommend that you also look at these two new versions.

Didactic perspective

Question stem

An important part of the question stem for this question type is the background image. Use a background image that is clear and where the "drop areas" can easily be identified e.g. if you choose that the drop area shall be visible for the students make sure the grey fields clearly stand out from the background image (see screenshot above).

Answer options

For this question type you need to decide how much support you want to give to the students. You can highlight the drop areas which makes it a bit easier for the students because they then choose between a limited number of answer alternatives. You can also change the settings so that a dragable object is drawn to a drop area as soon as it is placed closely to a drop area - a bit like a magnet.

For more information on selecting drop areas and location, see Settings in Inspera, Step 8 (Options).

Marking

If you choose to activate “Free placing drag areas” you maybe want to check the automatic marking. Some students' answers might be very close to what you consider correct.

Here the same applies as for question type "Hotspot"

The answer box
Click the answer box to see the side panel with steps (4) - (8)
Example of a drag area
Drag area means that the answer alternative is presented as moveable token that should be pulled to the right place. You can choose the initial position (i.e. how the question looks like for the students in the exam) by pulling the drag area now in the editing mode.
Example for a drop area
The drop area is a field to which a drag area is to be drawn. You can choose the drop area’s position by dragging it in the editing mode. If you want to use a background image, add it first (see step 5) before changing the position of the drop area.
Prompt
Here you write the text that’s displayed above the answer alternatives (the default setting is “Select one alternative”)
Background
Here you upload the background image. NOTE! The image should be png, jpg or svg and have the format 620x400 pixels.

Drop area
Here you can delete or add several drop areas. NOTE! You change the initial position of the drop area in the answer box, see step 3
Options
Here you can choose two settings that can affect if how the students can answer this question.
- Free placing drag areas
is set by default and means that the student can place the drag area anywhere in the image. If you however decide to inactivate the free placing the drag area object (token) is drawn to a drop area (gap) as soon as it is placed closely to it – similar to a magnet. We recommend that you inactivate free placing if you have marked the drop area but you should activate it if the drop area is not visible. Otherwise, it might be frustrating for the students if a drag area object is being moved automatically by the system.
- Highlight drop areas
is inactivated by default. To highlight drop areas means that all drop areas are made visible through a grey field. If you select this option, we recommend inactivating “Free placing drag areas” especially if the drag and drop areas have the same size. Otherwise, it ‘can be quite hard for the students to place the drag area at the exactly right spot.
